Neelu Patel from Ahmadabad, India is into it, saving environment at her own and sincere efforts by her paper Machie art. She makes vivid art work and marvelous art pieces through uses news papers, which would otherwise be wasted like a scrap as not every piece of newspaper is recycled.

She has made several art pieces by this all these years and held many exhibitions in India and abroad. If a country is given carbon credit for low carbon emission, why can’t be she as an individual too  ?

Many countries are meeting under one roof to curb it, but the results are yet to be seen. Apart from emission of greenhouse gases which is dangerously toying with Ozone layer, cutting of millions of trees everywhere is adding fuel to the problem.

We cut trees relentlessly to make paper and other things, but making paper is the big culprit. But how do we live without paper? How would a newspaper come out in the morning? Well, it is a genuine concern either way. So, could be at least recycle used paper to do away with wooden art pieces, to cut on trees cutting? Does this ides seem wierd?

Not al all, if we know someone who is doing this for the last two decades.

So how did she learn it, what prompted her to take this serious issue of environment preservation on her, what did she do till date, what are here future plans, let’s hear from her.

Says Neelu,  “Well, inspiration arises from within in a fraction of second and even you don’t know that your existence is going to dissolve in the beautiful outcome of it. That is inspiration to me and it struck me instantly when I thought of nurturing the extint like art of paper machie.”

Why this, when there have been many creative avenues in other arts forms also. For three major reasons, I took up this art. Number one, it is very much environment friendly. This art reuses thrown waster paper of newspaper in particular, which otherwise would have been literally wasted, if not properly recycled. The world is heading for paperless industry to maintain the ecological balance, by cutting less trees in future to make paper. So, my point is, why can’t we use the waste to a maximum amount? Paper machie serves the purpose with creativity attached to it.

Number two. I want to teach and pass on this art and message of conservation to as many youngsters as possible, so that, this art survives with a natural cause too. I am happy to share that I have taught this art to many, who too have mastered the message and art and I am sure it will be passed on to third generation too.

Number three. There has been a dangerous trend everywhere for so long to use plaster of Paris and chemical colours to make art e facts and sculptures, which toy with environments and creates hazards. There  are two ways to deal with this. Either by criticizing only or by giving a better option. I have opted for the second option and the result is in front of everyone to see and judge.

My art symbolizes my words and message. Do I need to express more  ? I don’t think so…….

She speaks of some of her memorable work especially the Sidi Saiyed Mosque of Ahmedabad into Paper Machie.

“What is preservation and heritage  It is only a mention on a few pages or one should go further? Especially when it is derived straight from the heart with an added concern of environment, one should go beyond common vision.

The mosque of Sidi Saiyed , a marvel of architecture always fascinated me since childhood even before I learnt the art of expression. The dream was nurtured in my subconscious mind all these years to create a piece of art.

So, there it is. I started to carve it with Paper machie art after observing the micro details and after almost 10 months of total commitment. I made it. The size and volume of it speaks the story through it is the art which previous over everything, I made it bigger, which is 3×4 feet. It is the realization of dream for me and nothing is more satisfactory then this.

“From the childhood, I am fond of crafting. Obliviously, I got encouragement from parents. However, my brother was having faith in my art, so when I completed my schooling after that he suggested me to do Diploma in Textile designing course, Mask making, drawing and Painting in fine arts.  Being truthful, my hobby gets most encouragement and motivation from my elder brother”. i working last 21 years in paper machie  pulp mask making”.

I  make paper craft with paper pulp, paintings, clay work, mud-mirror work, terracotta work, traditional designing work, vegetable printing etc. so nicely and with finishing such that your heart could not ignore it! After completing college .

I worked with Arvind Mill, Reliance mill etc. in designing studio and also she has organized many art an exhibition and participate in many craft mela.

Paper Machie design motif created with the pulp method for the creation of a Sidi Saiyad Ni Jali.

Two main methods are used to prepare papier-mâché; one makes use of paper strips glued together with adhesive, and the other method uses paper pulp obtained by soaking or boiling paper to which adhesive is then added.

The traditional method of making the pulp method, the paper is left in water at least overnight to soak, or boiled in abundant water until the paper dissolves in a pulp. The excess water is drained, an adhesive is added and the papier-mâché applied to a form or, especially for smaller or simpler objects, sculpted to shape.

Paper-machie adhesive is to use a mixture of water and flour or other starch, mixed to the consistency of pulp. Other adhesives can be used if thinned to a similar texture, such as  based glues wood glue. Adding  other additives such as glue to the mixture reduces the chances of the product developing motif.

Preparation methods

Paper drawing , Clay work, drawing and cutting, Pulp making, Use send paper for finishing work, Painting used  natural  eco friendly colors, wooden  Framing.

Natural paints waterproofed by glue painting with a suitable water-repelling paint. Before painting any product of papier-mâché, the glue must be fully dried, otherwise unique stuff will form and the eco friendly product will rot from the inside out.
