As the world teeters on the brink of annihilation, Dietrich Bonhoeffer joins a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler, risking his faith and fate to save millions of Jews from genocide. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was accused of participating in the July 20 plot to assassinate Hitler, depicted in the film Operación Valquiria (2008), after Hans von Dohnanyi was accused of being the “spiritual leader” of the attempt. There is no evidence that either man was involved in this particular event and was merely a pretext to eliminate both. Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Against stupidity we have no defense. Neither protest nor force can touch it. Reasoning is useless. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be dismissed – indeed, a fool can deny them by criticizing them, and if they are undeniable, they can simply be dismissed as trivial exceptions. I agree with other reviews that have found two major flaws in this film. THE AUTHOR. The film tells us (in the scripts) that B has written many, many books about faith. However, the film itself never shows him writing, publishing, or discussing any of the books. The most we see is B writing his thoughts in a journal. THE KILLER. Yes, historically there have been many failed plots to kill Hitler, and in fact the film shows us one. But there is no factual information in the film that shows B was ever arrested or charged with it. This is a very serious gap in history. SUMMARY. I am sorry, but I think B deserves a better script and a more vivid story. A good example is the film Walkaria with Tom Cruise (a non-religious story) which depicts the failed assassination attempt on Hitler. A film about Bonhoeffer could have had a lot more action, breaking up the boring conversations about faith in the face of evil.
